Medication information
What is fluoxetine?
What is fluoxetine?
Fluoxetine is a selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor (SSRI) antidepressant prescribed to treat a variety of behavioral issues in dogs and cats, including separation anxiety, obsessive-compulsive disorders, and aggression. This medication increases natural serotonin levels in the brain, which can help pets stay calmer, feel less anxious, and reduce aggressive behaviors. This is the generic form of Prozac.
Fluoxetine typically takes 4 to 8 weeks to take effect and create noticeable behavioral changes, but generally causes less sedation than drugs that work faster.
