How to spot & treat parasites and worms

Learn what might be causing your cat’s issues and what to do about it.

Symptoms

The symptoms of parasite and worm infections in your cat will vary based on what they have. Here are some things to look out for:

Roundworms: Pot-belly, diarrhea, and vomiting spaghetti-like worms. Some cats may not have any obvious symptoms, so if they’ve eaten or touched another animal’s poop or a wild animal, like a dead bird or rodent, you should get them checked.

Hookworms: Black/tarry stool, pale gums, weight loss, itchy feet, dull coat.

Tapeworms: Moving white “rice” segments near the anus or in their stool.

Heartworms: There are often no symptoms early on. Later in the illness, they may have coughing, fatigue, and exercise intolerance.

Giardia: Foul-smelling diarrhea, soft stool (often greenish), stool with mucus or fat, weight loss, fatigue vomiting.

How cats get infected

Most allergy medications deal with your cat’s inflamed skin or ear infections, but never address the underlying issues. At Dutch, we want you to fully understand what’s going on with your furry friends, whether it’s inflamed skin or recurring ear infections, which is why our plans combine medication and over-the-counter therapeutics to get to the root cause of the allergy, as well as relieve symptoms and prevent future issues from popping up.

How telemedicine can help

The licensed vets at Dutch regularly diagnose and treat parasite and worm infections in cats over video chat. They can do this based on your cat’s symptoms and history, photos (especially with visible worms), and videos.

The vet can prescribe a broad-spectrum dewormer for cats, which treats multiple common worms, as well as flea, tick, and heartworm medication for year-round prevention. In some cases, a cat may need an additional round of deworming. If testing is needed, we offer at-home fecal tests. The vet can also teach you what to watch for (like vomiting, pale gums, and lethargy) and when in-person care is needed.

If you have multiple cats or dogs in your home, they’ll all need treatment. The good news is your Dutch membership includes unlimited vet calls for up to 5 pets at no extra cost.

For heartworm, we can prescribe preventive heartworm medication.

When to go to a local vet

If your cat has any of the following symptoms, you should take them to an in-person vet:

  • Persistent vomiting
  • Pale gums
  • Severe diarrhea
  • Signs of anemia
  • Weakness
  • Collapse
  • Bloody stool
  • Persistent tapeworm segments after treatment or visible weight loss
  • Coughing or labored breathing

Frequently asked questions

Our vets regularly diagnose and treat worm infections in cats through telemedicine. Most routine parasite cases can be diagnosed or safely treated without in-person testing. And broad-spectrum dewormers treat most common worms.

Here’s what to expect:

  1. You describe your cat’s symptoms and upload photos or videos.
  2. The vet can often diagnose based on that. If needed, they’ll have you order one of our at-home fecal test kits for a definitive answer. You just collect a sample and mail it to the lab.
  3. Once there’s a diagnosis, the vet will prescribe the appropriate dewormer. Place your order and we’ll ship it to you.
  4. Follow up with your vet anytime over video chat or messaging.

If you have multiple pets in your household, they’ll need to be treated too. Fortunately, your Dutch membership includes unlimited vet calls for up to 5 pets at no extra cost.

When booking a video call with a vet, you'll be asked a few questions about your pet’s health issue. Depending on the issue, you may also be asked to fill out a longer questionnaire about their symptoms and share photographs of them so our veterinarians can better understand what’s going on. You’ll then pick an appointment time that works best for you.

During your video call, one of our licensed veterinarians will talk to you about the symptoms your pet is experiencing, ask you questions, review your pet’s medical history if you’ve provided it, and answer any questions you have. The vet will ask to see your pet and their environment. And they may ask you to perform some simple checks on them if needed.

After your video call, the vet will send you a message with a custom treatment plan to help your pet feel better, including a link to buy any recommended prescription or over-the-counter medications. Place your order and we’ll ship it free.

Your vet call will be with veterinarian licensed in your state — no vet techs or nurses. Our vets all have years of in-person experience and have passed our rigorous hiring process. You’ll be able to message your vet questions after your call and book future calls with the same vet if you like.

Our memberships are designed to make your pet’s care as easy and affordable as possible. Here’s how your costs will break down:

Membership: You can choose to pay the total price upfront or in 4 installments. All memberships include unlimited care for up to 5 pets at no extra cost.

Vet calls and messaging: No cost — video chat and message with vets as often as you need for free.

Medication: The price will vary depending on your pet’s needs. To keep your costs down, we offer a price-match guarantee, free standard shipping, $25 off your first product order, and 20% off your first flea & tick order.

Our vets can treat 90% of issues — but we encourage all pet parents to maintain a relationship with a local vet for things that require hands-on care. This includes:

  • Yearly exams
  • Emergencies
  • Issues that require physical examinations (like a wound that needs stitches or trouble breathing)
  • Blood work and imaging (X-rays or ultrasounds)
  • Vaccines
  • Surgeries
  • Procedures
  • Injectable medications (if your pet needs them)

The health and safety of pets is our top priority. If one of our vets believes an in-person visit is best for your pet, they’ll refer you to a local veterinarian and advise you how to care for them until they can be seen. Our vets are also happy to provide second opinions and follow-up care after in-person vet visits.
