What are the possible side effects of Ketoconazole?

The most common side effects of Ketoconazole are loss of appetite, vomiting, diarrhea, and weight loss. Other potential side effects include liver toxicity, haircoat color change, and cataracts. Side effects are more common in cats. See the insert for more information on side effects.

Safety Information

  • Do not use in dogs with liver disease or known hypersensitivity to ketoconazole. Requires an acidic environment for absorption — do not give with antacids. Monitor for signs of liver toxicity during treatment.1

  • Cats are more sensitive to ketoconazole than dogs and may experience more severe side effects.

For veterinary use only. Monitor liver function during extended treatment periods.1

While ketoconazole is also used in human medicine, do not take medication prescribed for your pet. Human and veterinary formulations differ in dosage and may cause harm. Pregnant women should avoid handling this medication.1
