Clonidine is a centrally acting alpha adrenergic agonist that is used as an adjunctive to treat behavior problems, particularly anxiety and phobia-related issues in dogs and as an antidiarrheal agent in dogs and cats. Medications alone may not solve behavioral problems and are may be combined with behavioral modification techniques recommended by your veterinarian or animal behaviorist.

Safety Information

  • Monitor for excessive sedation, weakness, vomiting, diarrhea, or changes in heart rate. Pets with heart disease, severe liver or kidney dysfunction, or low blood pressure should be closely supervised. Never abruptly stop long-term therapy, as rebound hypertension can occur.1

Warnings 

  • Use only under veterinary supervision. Do not use in pregnant or lactating animals unless specifically prescribed. Avoid combining with other sedative or blood pressure medications unless directed.2

Human Warnings

  • Clonidine can cause severe hypotension, bradycardia, and sedation in humans if ingested accidentally. Keep out of reach of children. In case of accidental ingestion, call a physician or poison control center immediately.3
