What does a dog seizure look like?

Seizures are amongst the most terrifying experiences for dogs and owners. Whether caused by a neurological disorder known as epilepsy or a brain anomaly, seizures are extremely serious and should be treated immediately.

Just like in humans, seizures can take on a number of forms in dogs. There are 8 different types of seizures that a dog can have, each with its own symptoms:

  • Automatisms: repetitive movements like lip smacking, chewing, or licking
  • Atonic seizure: sudden loss of muscle tone
  • Cluster seizure: 2 or more seizures in a 24 hour period
  • Focal seizure: originates from both sides of the brain
  • Myoclonic seizure: sudden, quick stiffening of the muscles
  • Tonic seizure: stiffening of the muscles lasting several seconds
  • Tonic-clonic seizure: a tonic seizure followed by shorter jerking movements

What causes seizures in dogs?

Seizures in dogs can be caused by a host of different things. The most prominent is a condition known as epilepsy, which is a chronic disruption of the brain’s usual electrical activities. This is a genetic and hereditary disease for which no cure is known.

Seizures can also be a symptom of other health issues and diseases. These include chronic diseases like liver or kidney disease, anemia, and low or high blood sugar. It can also be caused by acute conditions like poisoning, strokes, and head injuries.

What is the best seizure medication for dogs?

If you suspect that your dog is having a seizure, contact your vet immediately. They will be able to assess your dog’s condition and determine what is causing the seizure. If the seizure is a symptom of another illness, the vet may treat that illness first, rather than prescribing a dog seizure medication.

If your dog is having more than one seizure a month, your veterinarian will likely want to start them on a seizure medication for dogs. Medication for dog seizures typically comes in the form of an anti-epileptic drug (AED).

Finding the right dog seizure medication can be a process. Typically, treatment begins with a phenobarbital. If that medication isn’t working, your vet may want to add a supplemental anti-seizure medication, like Zonisamide Capsules (Rx), K-BroVet (Rx), Levetiracetam ER (Extended Release) Tablets (Rx), or Levetiracetam ER (Immediate Release) Tablets (Rx).

What are the side effects of dog seizure medication?

Depending on the seizure medication for dogs that your veterinarian prescribes, you may see side effects like lethargy, weight gain, loss of appetite, vomiting, or diarrhea. Talk to your vet about the side effects your dog is experiencing from their seizure medications for dogs.
